As Police and Crime Commissioner I am responsible for holding the Chief Constable of Wiltshire Police to account on behalf of the people of Wiltshire and Swindon.
The role of PCCs is to provide a local link between the police and communities, working to turn the desires and ambitions of the public, in terms of policing and crime reduction, into action.
As PCC for Wiltshire and Swindon I receive the funding relating to policing and reducing crime in the area.
I set the strategic direction and aims for Wiltshire Police through my Police and Crime Plan. My second plan was finalised last year and can be accessed vis the home page.
I also set the local policing precept (which forms part of the council tax charge).
I appointed the current Chief Constable in 2015 and I have the power to remove him from office if necessary.
I also have wider responsibilities, including:
- Responsibility for delivering community safety and reducing crime,
- The ability to make crime and disorder reduction grants to any organisation within the force area that supports community safety priorities,
- A duty to deliver better value for money and to improve the effectiveness of policing.
As well as working with the Chief Constable, I work closely with local partners such as Wiltshire Council and Swindon Borough Council, and other partner agencies in relation to their policing priorities.
