Volunteers play a practical and valuable role within both Wiltshire Police and my office. From Special Constables and Police Support Volunteers to Independent Custody Visitors and community-based roles, they provide additional capacity and insight that strengthens the service we deliver.
Their contribution takes many forms. Some support operational policing, others bring professional expertise or assist with engagement and scrutiny.
Independent volunteers help ensure transparency and accountability, while others work more directly with communities, helping us stay connected to local priorities and concerns.
Within the OPCC, volunteers are also an important part of how we engage with the public and maintain independent oversight. Their involvement helps ensure that different perspectives are heard and that our work reflects the needs of the communities we serve.
Volunteering is a significant commitment, often alongside work, study or family responsibilities. It is not something people have to do—it is something they choose to do. That choice, and the time given as a result, makes a clear difference.
Volunteers’ Week is a chance to acknowledge that contribution. The support volunteers provide is valued, and it is an important part of the wider policing picture in Wiltshire.
We will continue to ensure that volunteering opportunities are accessible, well supported, and aligned with the needs of our communities.
To everyone currently volunteering across Wiltshire Police and the OPCC—thank you for your continued contribution.
