The Youth Commission enables young people, including those from underrepresented groups, to support, challenge and inform the work of the Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC), as well as have a stronger voice on the police and crime issues that affect their lives.
The project is now entering its fourth year - thanks to backing from PCC Philip Wilkinson, and is being provided by youth organisation Participation People.
Mr. Wilkinson said: “The Youth Commission, and its members, has been invaluable in bridging the gap between young people and the police, so I would encourage anyone who has a view on policing and would like to make a difference to get involved.
“The project ensures that young people, including those from underrepresented groups, have a say in how their communities are policed and how key issues they identify should be tackled.
“For too long young people have had too quiet a voice in the local services and support available to them, and the Youth Commission goes some way to rectify that deficit.
“This youth led project will ensure that this engagement now happens and when it comes to police and crime matters, I will ensure that their incredibly insightful and thought-provoking observations and research are fully implemented in a timely and considered manner.”
Annabel Hughes, Youth Voice and Influence Officer at Participation People said: “We at Participation People are so excited to begin this transformational and explorative project with the Police Crime Commissioner. Through creative youth-lead practice, we look forward to co-producing solutions and suggestions with local young people in order to improve and inform policing in Wiltshire for the better... as well as having a lot of fun along the way!”
