Wiltshire and Swindon’s Youth Commission will be presenting their key findings on community safety and policing issues to the Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) at the Big Conversation Conference this week.
Over the past year members of the Youth Commission gathered the views of over 2300 young people aged 14-25 from across the county on the community safety and policing issues that matter most to them, which will be presented to the PCC, Wiltshire Police and partner agencies.
The Youth Commission itself is facilitated by Leaders Unlocked on behalf of the OPCC, and ensures priorities are agreed to ensure that young people’s views and experiences are reflected in the next police and crime plan, future policies and strategies.
This process enables young people to gain new knowledge, skills and experiences, as well have their say on crime and policing issues that matter most to them and their peers.
Wiltshire PCC Philip Wilkinson said: “Engaging with young people is one of the most satisfying elements of my job as the PCC. This group of Youth Commissioners bring a fresh take on policing and community safety that we otherwise wouldn’t have considered.
“Sometimes we discuss and commission services for young people without actively engaging with them on their wants and needs, and the Youth Commission bridges that gap to ensure that young people are getting what they need most from Wiltshire Police and my office.
“I’m really looking forwarded to hearing what the young people of Wiltshire and Swindon have to say on policing and crime issues that really matter to them.”
Last year’s Youth Commission Conference priorities included mental health services, drug and alcohol misuse, social media and online, relationships with the Police, abuse and violence and grooming and exploitation.
These points were fed back into policing and actions were taken on each recommendation, as detailed in the You Said We Did summary.
The Big Conversation Conference will be held at Chippenham Town Hall on Thursday 16 March 2023.
