Detached youth work aims to connect with children & young people in their chosen environments, offering support in non-traditional settings. These locations typically include places where children and young people naturally gather, such as streets, parks, shopping centres, fast food outlets, or other community spaces. Unlike traditional youth services provided in clubs, schools, or colleges, detached youth work engages with children and young people directly within the community. The frequency and length of these interactions can vary, encompassing activities such as relationship building, providing information and guidance, directing them to other services, and organising sports and cultural events. This approach is flexible and centred around the needs of each individual child/young person.
The Wiltshire and Swindon Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner (OPCC) has been awarded a grant by the Home Office to fund activities aimed at engaging young people at risk of serious violence. Multi-agency partners across Wiltshire and Swindon, including the Swindon Serious Violence Reduction Meetings and the Tactical Gangs and Knife Carriers Meetings have identified specific areas where targeted interventions are required.
The Detached Youth Work will provide support for at-risk children and youth in non-institutional, community-based settings to offer direct engagement, signposting to other services, and diversionary activities. Detached youth work emphasises flexibility and responsiveness to children and young people’s needs in the community, promoting positive interactions and building relationships over time.
